This week in Brussels, the European Parliament officially passed the AI Act. This sends another signal to the world that the focus on this transformational technology is not waning anytime soon. Here at home, we must harness what makes us special to compete on the global stage of AI development: our commitment to entrepreneurialism and free markets, and the competitive culture that drives innovation and progress.

While the devil is always in the details, this new framework proposes triaging AI use cases into a grading system with a view towards creating a balance between security and safety, and unleashing some of the entrepreneurial vision needed to succeed. Crucially, the approach attempts to simplify a complex technology and bring the public into the conversation.

The good news is the U.S. remains the global tech leader — including in AI. Our culture of building and scaling is unmatched. However, to hold our position of technological primacy, we should look at what other regions are doing, figure out what’s best for us, and implement smart public policy that elevates our success to new heights.

To that end, last week at the INCOMPAS Policy Summit we announced the AI Center. The Center will play a pivotal role in informing legislators and regulators on the best path forward when it comes to implementing policies that protect innovation and open competition in the age of AI. What’s clear from the vote in Brussels is that nation states around the world are rolling up their sleeves — the debate is advancing. For our part, we can’t wait to get started. Stay tuned for more updates soon.
